Dr. Richard Starke - MLA for Vermilion-Lloydminster

Lord, we ask that MLA Dr. Richard Starke would be mindful of Your presence with him he faces a busy schedule and the day’s many demands.  May his strength be renewed and his vision for the future of Vermillion – Lloydminster be clear.  We pray for time for rest and also recreation and enjoyable gatherings with family and friends.  Amen.

Richard Starke was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Vermilion-Lloydminster on April 23, 2012. Dr. Starke currently serves as a member of the Treasury Board and the Standing Policy Committees on Health and Seniors, and Environment and Energy. He is a member of the Standing Committee on Privileges and Elections, Standing Orders and Printing. He also serves as chair of the Rural Health Care Review Panel.

He previously served as Minister of Tourism, Parks and Recreation and as chair of the Natural Resources and Environment Ministerial Group. In addition, he has served as a member of the following committees and boards: the Agenda and Priorities Committee, Operations and Policy Cabinet Committee, Southern Alberta Recovery Ministerial Task Force and the Families and Community Ministerial Group. He has also served as a member of the Legislature Standing Committees on Alberta's Economic Future, Public Accounts and Private Bills.

Dr. Starke was born and raised in Edmonton. He attended the University of Alberta and later the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, where he graduated with a doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) in 1983. Dr. Starke joined the Lloydminster Animal Hospital in 1983, became a partner in 1985 and was senior partner from 1990 until his retirement from practice in December 2011.

Dr. Starke first became interested in politics while in high school, when he participated in model parliamentary activities as a member of the TUXIS Parliament of Alberta. During his time in TUXIS Parliament he served in various cabinet positions and as Premier and Speaker. He also represented Alberta at the first National Youth Parliament in Ottawa in 1980, serving as Minister of Energy. In 1985 he became the youngest person to be elected to city council in Lloydminster, when at the age of 25 he was elected alderman. He served two terms, from 1985 to 1991.

An active member of his community, Dr. Starke has served as a member and board chair of the Lloydminster Region Health Foundation. He has been involved with the Rotary Club of Lloydminster and Rotary International since the late 1980s, and he is a founding member of Lloydminster's German Heritage Society. He has also served as director of coaching and programs for the Lloydminster Border Blades Speed Skating Club.


Dr. Starke lives north of Lloydminster in the Durness district with his wife, Alison, their Bernese Mountain Dog, Liesl, and two annoyingly affectionate cats. Both of their sons currently attend university.

Ms. Danielle Smith - MLA for Highwood

Heavenly Father, our prayer today for MLA Danielle Smith is that Your guiding hand would lead her in the next steps she takes.  Clear obstacles out of the way as she seeks to walk with the team.  We pray for unity in the team and an ability to move together carrying out plans that will bring about favour and good report with the people of Alberta.  Bless her with help, vitality and joy in serving.  Amen.

Danielle Smith was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Highwood on April 23, 2012. She served as leader of the Wildrose Party of Alberta from October 17, 2009, to December 17, 2014.

She previously served on the Special Standing Committee on Members’ Services and the Standing Committee on Alberta’s Economic Future.

Prior to entering politics, Ms. Smith was the director of provincial affairs for Alberta with the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, CFIB. She worked with all levels of government to represent the interests of CFIB’s 10,000 small-business members in Alberta.

Before joining CFIB, Ms. Smith had extensive experience in the media. She was an editorial writer and columnist at the Calgary Herald for six years. She served as host of Global Sunday, a national current affairs television talk show, and was also the host of two programs on CKMX 1060 AM radio in Calgary, Health Frontiers and Standing Ground. She has made frequent guest appearances as a commentator on TV and radio.

Ms. Smith’s public policy experience began with an internship at the Fraser Institute. She was also elected as a trustee for the Calgary board of education and served as the director of the Alberta Property Rights Initiative and the Canadian Property Rights Research Institute.


Ms. Smith received a BA in English and a BA in economics from the University of Calgary. She married her husband, David Moretta in 2006 and is the proud stepmother of David’s son Jonathan. Danielle and David live in High River with their two dogs, Caine and Colt.

Dr. Raj Sherman - MLA for Edmonton-Meadowlark

Father God, we pray today for Dr. Raj Sherman as he gives leadership to the Liberal Party here in Alberta.  May he find opportunity to meet with the people of Edmonton – Meadowlark and hear their heart to grow a strong community within the metropolis of Edmonton.   May he have an awareness of Your presence giving him wisdom and discernment for the decisions he makes today.  Surround him with people who can assist him in carrying out the vision You have given him for a strong Alberta.  Amen.

Liberal Opposition Leader

Dr. Raj Sherman was elected to his second term as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for Edmonton-Meadowlark on April 23, 2012. In September 2011 he became Leader of the Liberal Opposition. Previously he served as parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Health and Wellness from March 12, 2008, to November 22, 2010.

He currently serves as a member of the Standing Committee on the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund and the Special Standing Committee on Members' Services.

Dr. Sherman completed his medical studies at the University of Alberta, and after obtaining his MD from the Faculty of Medicine, he specialized in family and emergency medicine. During the first term of his medical career he served as a STARS flight physician, as president of the section of emergency medicine for the Alberta Medical Association (AMA) and as a member of the AMA Health Issues Council.

Among his many professional accomplishments Dr. Sherman received a gold pin for his service with STARS, a bronze medal from the Lifesaving Society Alberta and Northwest Territories, and the Alan Drummond advocacy award from the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians.

Dr. Sherman is a past member of the University of Alberta Senate and a clinical lecturer at the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine. He continues to be a keynote speaker and panellist at national health conferences.

Active in his community, Dr. Sherman is a director of the Society for Helping Lives in Poverty, a past member of the McKernan housing community, and a soccer and basketball coach. He also runs a small construction business designing and building custom-made homes.

In July 2011 he was voted one of the 50 most influential Albertans by Alberta Venture magazine.


He continues practising emergency medicine on weekends in Edmonton, Alberta.

Honourable Donald Scott - MLA for Fort McMurray-Conklin

Lord, thank You for this new day.  We pray for the Honourable Donald Scott, that You go before him today to make a plain path for him to walk.  We ask that as he proceeds forward You would bring to him the people he needs to connect with and the resources he needs to accomplish his goals.  Thank You for his leadership in the cabinet position he holds and the blessing he is to Advanced Education in Alberta helping to make it superior and desirable to future students.  Amen.

Minister of Innovation and Advanced Education

Deputy Government House Leader

Don Scott was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Fort McMurray-Conklin on April 23, 2012. On September 15, 2014 he was appointed Minister of Innovation and Advanced Education. Additionally he serves as Deputy Government House Leader.

He previously served as the Associate Minister of Accountability, Transparency and Transformation.
A graduate of the University of New Brunswick and the University of Cambridge, Don has worked as a lawyer in Fort McMurray for more than 10 years. In 2006 he founded the McMurray Law Office, where he practises in the areas of family, real estate and business law. During his time in England in the late 1990s he served as an assistant solicitor with the Bloody Sunday inquiry, a 12-year public inquiry into the killing of 13 civilians by British soldiers. In 2010 Don was appointed to the Queen’s Counsel of Alberta.

Don served as councillor for ward 1 of the regional municipality of Wood Buffalo from October 2010 until his election to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.

An active community member and volunteer, Don was a board member of the United Way for six years , and previously served as president for the local chapter. He also volunteers as a board member of Legal Aid in Fort McMurray and Children First, and has served on the Northern Lights Health Region Ethics Committee for two years. Don has served as a Bencher for the Law Society of Alberta.


Don and his family live in the Thickwood area of Fort McMurray. He is an avid badminton and basketball player who also enjoys spending his free time hiking and fly-fishing.

Mr. Shayne Saskiw - MLA for Lac La Biche-St. Paul-Two Hills

Father in heaven, thank you that every day is a new day with new possibilities.  Be with MLA Shayne Saskiw as he serves and cares for the people and affairs of the region from Lac La Biche to St. Paul to Two Hills.  May he have discernment and clarity as he and community leaders make plans, projections and put things in motion for a change so objectives can be reached.  Bless him with joy and a light heartedness in his service here in Alberta.  Amen.

Shayne Saskiw was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Lac La Biche-St. Paul-Two Hills on April 23, 2012. He also serves as the Wildrose Official Opposition House Leader.

Mr. Saskiw was born and raised in the Two Hills area and grew up working on the family purebred cattle farm. He has a bachelor of commerce with distinction from the University of Alberta and also holds a bachelor of laws with distinction from the University of Alberta Faculty of Law. Upon graduation he was awarded the George Bligh O’Connor silver medal in law for the second-highest academic standing in his graduating class.


Mr. Saskiw practiced law with a specialization in tax litigation, having worked at a premier tax law boutique firm, and has previously clerked at the Tax Court of Canada in Ottawa.

Mrs. Janice Sarich - MLA for Edmonton-Decore

Janice Sarich was elected to her second term as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for Edmonton-Decore on April 23, 2012. She currently serves as a member of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts and the Standing Committee on Alberta’s Economic Future. Previously she served as a member of the Standing Committee Private Bills and the Standing Committee on Families and Communities.

In addition to serving as an MLA during her first term, she was appointed to the position of parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Education on March 12, 2008. In addition, she served as a member of the Cabinet Policy Committee on Education, the Standing Committee on Private Bills and the Standing Committee on Education.

Prior to serving with the Legislative Assembly, Mrs. Sarich served as the Ward 2 Edmonton Catholic School Board trustee from 2001 to 2007. Before entering public service, Janice was president of her own business consulting company.

Born and raised in Edmonton, Mrs. Sarich has a bachelor’s degree in physical education and a master’s of education degree from the University of Alberta. She also holds project management and project leadership certificates from NAIT.

An avid volunteer, Mrs. Sarich has been involved with the following community organizations:

  • Catholic Social Services - Children and Youth Family-Based Services Advisory Committee

Mr. Peter Sandhu - MLA for Edmonton-Manning

Mr. Sandhu was born in Manawan, India in the Punjab Province. He immigrated to Canada in 1979, and married his wife Kamal in 1984. They have three children: Preetinder, Bhavneet and Inderdeep.

Mr. Bruce Rowe - MLA for Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills

Bruce Rowe was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills on April 23, 2012. Mr. Rowe currently serves on the Standing Committee on Private Bills and the Standing Committee on Alberta’s Economic Future. Previously he served as deputy chair on the Standing Committee on Resource Stewardship.

Mr. Rowe was born and raised in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. After graduating from St. Louis high school, he became an electrician. Mr. Rowe owned and operated an electrical contracting company in Calgary for 35 years. He retired from the private sector in 2005, allowing him to focus his attention and energy on serving the people of Beiseker and all Albertans.

For 10 years Mr. Rowe was involved with the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association as a director and vice-president. He also served as a director with the Alberta Municipal Services Corporation for eight years.

Mr. Rowe served the village of Beiseker in a variety of public roles, including councillor, mayor and library board member in the last 10 years.


Mr. Rowe and his wife, Carol, are proud to call Beiseker home. They have two grown children and two grandchildren. In his spare time he likes to play golf and restore old cars. He also previously served in the Uncle at Large program for three years.

Mr. Rogers moved to Leduc in 1975 and is a graduate of Leduc Composite High. In 1980, he obtained a Diploma in Accounting from NAIT, followed by a Certificate in Local Government Studies from the University of Alberta in 1988.

He has worked as an assistant controller for an oil company, served as assistant treasurer for the City of Leduc, and assistant town manager for the Town Of Redcliff.

In 1992, he moved back to Leduc and started a successful real estate career with Royal Lepage. In the fall of 1992, He ran successfully for city council, and was re-elected in 1995. In 1998 he was elected mayor, and was re-elected in 2001. He was a 10-year board member of The Alberta Urban Municipalities Association, and served as President from 2001 to 2003. He also served as a board member of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. For his work with the AUMA, Mr. Rogers was recognized by Alberta Venture Magazine as one of Alberta’s 50 Most Influential people in 2003. In 2012, Mr. Rogers was recognized by NAIT as one of the 50 outstanding grads of the past 50 years. He is the proud father of three adult children, and an avid community volunteer, who has been a member of the Leduc Lions Club for over 20 years.

Mr. Dave Quest - MLA for Strathcona-Sherwood Park

Mr. Quest obtained a business diploma from NAIT in 1985 and served with the Better Business Bureau of Northern Alberta for 10 years, fulfilling various roles, including director, chair and director of the Canadian council. As well, he has been awarded a General Motors Dealer Award of Excellence.

Mr. Quest has been an active member of his community for nearly 25 years. During this time he fulfilled a variety of roles, including:
  • Regional director for Elk Island on the provincial executive from 1998-2008
  • Involvement with Friends of the Games Fundraising Committee for the 2007 Western Canada Summer Games
  • Coaching Sherwood Park minor soccer teams from 2002 to 2006
Mr. Quest also has his private pilot’s licence and has completed six Edmonton half-marathons.

He and his wife, Fiona, live in Sherwood Park with their son Jack and two dogs.

Mr. Sohail Quadri - MLA for Edmonton-Mill Woods

God we are thankful for this new day and are remembering MLA Sohail Quadri of Edmonton – Millwoods in prayer today.  We know that You are faithful to answer our prayer for wisdom and understanding for what is best overall for his constituency and the strength to carry out all the tasks before him.  May he know that he is making a significant contribution in his community and he is diligent to communicate and listen to them concerning their needs.  May Your blessing also rest upon him and his family.  Amen.

Sohail Quadri was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Edmonton-Mill Woods on April 23, 2012. In addition to his various responsibilities as an MLA he presently serves as Legislative Secretary to the Premier (reporting to the Premier) and is on the following committees:
  • Standing Committee on Alberta’s Economic Future
  • Standing Committee on Legislative Offices
  • Private Members’ Business Committee
  • Montana-Alberta Bilateral Advisory Council
  • Results Based Budgeting – Economic Development Challenge Panel
Previously Mr. Quadri served as deputy chair of the Select Special Chief Electoral Officer Search Committee, deputy chair of the Select Special Ethics Commissioner Search Committee, and as a member of the Standing Committees on Privileges and Elections, Standing Orders and Printing and the Standing Committee on Public Accounts.

With a bachelor's degree in commerce, Mr. Quadri found success as a local entrepreneur and small-business owner for several years before deciding to dedicate his time between politics and volunteering.

An advocate of many cultural and social events in the capital region, Mr. Quadri devotes a large portion of his time to volunteering. He is an active member of the Lions Club and was a founding member of the Millwoods Cricket Club. He sat on the board of directors for the Society to Defy Enmity Encourage Peace and the board of directors of the South Asian Long Term Care Foundation. In addition, he is known for his extensive fundraising in support of various humanitarian and relief efforts locally and abroad.


Mr. Quadri is an innate family man. He is very close to his extended family his three brothers, one sister, nieces and nephews.
